10 Best French Fashion Brands [Statistics 2024]

Luxury French clothing brands, such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Dior are famous worldwide — which is nothing new. For centuries, Paris has been regarded as the world’s fashion capital. French culture is intimately linked to fashion, and the best French clothing brands still lead global fashion trends today.

France has a sizable apparel market, which will generate USD 40.65 billion in 2024. With a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.16%, the market is projected to grow to USD 41.12 billion in 2025. Of course, women’s apparel is the largest segment, with a market volume of USD 22.53 billion in 2024.

So, what are the top 10 French fashion brands dominating this industry?

The 10 Top French Fashion Brands

  1. Louis Vuitton

  3. Hermès
  4. Dior
  5. Saint Laurent
  6. Givenchy

1. Louis Vuitton

According to Brand Finance’s 2024 annual brand value ranking report, Louis Vuitton is the top French clothing brand. This famous French fashion brand produces apparel, leather goods, and perfumes.

Louis Vuitton started the company in 1854 by making luggage for carriage travelers. Today, the brand’s luggage products are still incredibly popular.

Louis Vuitton is owned by LVMH, one of the world’s largest luxury products groups. LVMH owns 75 prestigious brands across fashion & leather goods, wines & spirits, perfumes & cosmetics, watches & jewelry, and more. These brands include:

  • Moët Hennessy
  • Tiffany
  • Dior
  • Givenchy
  • Kenzo
  • Celine
  • Sephora
  • TAG Heuer

The LVHM group generated a whopping EUR 86.2 billion in revenue in 2023 (roughly USD 92.53 billion), with 8% originating in France and 45% attributed to fashion and leather goods. It operates a retail network of over 6,000 stores worldwide.

2. Chanel

Brand Finance’s 2024 annual report ranks Chanel as the second-most valuable French clothing brand. Chanel specializes in haute couture clothing, accessories, perfumes, and eyewear.

Gabrielle Bonheur "Coco" Chanel founded this luxury fashion house in Paris in 1910 to create audacious clothes that practical women could wear. Today, Chanel is renowned for flagship products like No.5 Perfume and the ‘Chanel Suit.’

Unlike many of the high-end French fashion brands on this list, Chanel isn’t owned by a parent company. Instead, it’s owned privately by the Wertheimer family. This famous French fashion brand achieved an annual revenue of USD 19.7 billion in 2023.

3. Hermès

Brand Finance lists Hermès as France’s third most valuable apparel and clothing brand. Hermès produces ready-to-wear, leather goods, lifestyle accessories, jewelry, perfumes, and home furnishings.

This high-end French fashion brand was first established in 1837 in Paris as a saddle-making workshop by Thierry Hermès — a fact represented today by the brand’s logo, which features a horse-drawn carriage.

Hermès has produced many iconic luxury products over the years, most notably the ‘Kelly Bag’ and the ‘Birkin Bag,’ which established the brand’s luxury status.

The company generated EUR 13.4 billion (roughly USD 14.38 billion) in 2023.

4. Dior

Brand Finance’s 2024 report ranks Dior as France’s fourth-best fashion brand. Dior produces fashion and leather goods, perfumes and cosmetics, watches and jewelry, and wine and spirits.

Christian Dior established this fashion house in 1946, backed by French entrepreneur Marcel Boussac. At the time, Dior introduced his ‘New Look,’ which featured groundbreaking designs and used an abundance of fabric—something that was unheard of during the severe rationing imposed in France after World War II. Dior wanted to break from the sombreness of wartime and encouraged women to feel joy and dress extravagantly again.

Today, Dior is owned by LVMH.

5. Saint Laurent

Yves Saint Laurent is the fifth top French fashion brand, according to Brand Finance’s 2024 report. It produces haute couture, ready-to-wear, leather accessories, and footwear.

Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-Laurent founded this famous French fashion brand in 1961 after spending his youth working for Christian Dior.

Today, this top French fashion brand is owned by Kering, a luxury group that owns many fashion houses, including Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga, and Alexander McQueen.

Kering generated approximately EUR 19.5 billion (approximately USD 20.93 billion) in 2023, including EUR 3.179 million (around USD 3.41 million) from Saint Laurent. Notably, 71% of Saint Laurent’s revenue was from leather goods, with just 12% from ready-to-wear.

6. Givenchy

Brand Finance’s 2024 annual report ranks Givenchy as the sixth most valuable French brand. This luxury fashion house produces haute couture, ready-to-wear, accessories, perfumes, and cosmetics.

Hubert de Givenchy founded this top French fashion brand in 1952 and was known for designing clothing for his friend and famous movie star, Audrey Hepburn.

Today, Givenchy is also owned by the luxury conglomerate LVMH.

7. Celine

Celine is another top French fashion brand. It was established in 1945 by designer Céline Vipiana and her husband, Richard, who created made-to-measure children’s shoes in Paris.

Today, the brand produces ready-to-wear, shoes, bags, and accessories.

Celine was integrated into the LVHM group for 2.7 billion francs (roughly USD 540 million) in 1996.

8. Chloé

Chloé is another top French fashion brand, which produces ready-to-wear, bags, shoes, and accessories.

It was founded in 1952 by Gaby Aghion. Today, Chloé is owned by Richemont, a conglomerate that owns many luxury brands, including Mont Blanc, Cartier, and Van Cleef & Arpels.

Richemont generated EUR 20.62 billion (USD 22.13 billion) in 2023. EUR 10.704 billion (USD 11.49 billion) from jewelry, EUR 7.001 billion (USD 7.51 billion) from watches, and EUR 789 million (USD 846.84 million) from clothing.

9. Kenzo

Kenzo is a top French clothing brand that produces ready-to-wear, shoes, accessories, and bags for men and women.

It was established in Paris in 1970 by Japanese designer Kenzo Takada, who began by creating handmade women’s clothing. In 1983, Kenzo started designing collections for men and children in 1987, followed by fragrances in 1988.

LVMH now owns Kenzo.

10. Lanvin

Lanvin is a leading French fashion brand that produces ready-to-wear, bags, shoes, and sneakers for men and women.

Founded in Paris by Jeanne Lanvin in 1889, Lanvin is now a subsidiary of the Shanghai-based Lanvin Group, which owns many luxury brands, including Wolford, Sergio Rossi, St. John, and Caruso. The Lanvin Group generated EUR 426 million (USD 457.23 million) in 2023.

Final Thoughts

Although this list of top French clothing brands features only luxury fashion houses, 87% of France’s apparel sales in 2024 will be attributed to non-luxury goods.

Still, luxury or not, the legacy and innovation of these top French fashion brands undoubtedly shape global trends.
