Yes, AliExpress is legit. It's a real marketplace run by Alibaba Group since 2010, your payment is held until your order arrives, and its Buyer Protection refunds orders that never show up or don't match the listing. What AliExpress doesn't do is vet every one of its independent sellers, so the platform is safe while individual stores range from excellent to dishonest.

AliExpress launched in 2010 as the cross-border retail arm of Alibaba Group, the Chinese e-commerce company behind Alibaba.com and Taobao. Alibaba.com is for bulk wholesale with minimum order quantities; AliExpress lets you buy a single unit at close to wholesale prices. The important part for safety is the model. AliExpress is a platform, like eBay or Amazon's third-party marketplace. Hundreds of thousands of separate stores set their own prices, write their own listings and ship their own orders. AliExpress takes your payment, holds it, and settles disputes. So "is AliExpress legit" really splits into two questions: can you trust the platform's money handling (largely yes), and can you trust this particular seller (that depends on you checking).

What regulators have found

A legit company can still have real problems, and AliExpress has a public record worth knowing before you spend money there.

• EU, July 2026: the European Commission fined AliExpress €550 million for breaching the Digital Services Act. The Commission found AliExpress hadn't diligently assessed or reduced the risk of illegal, unsafe and counterfeit products spreading on its platform, and ordered it to fix that. AliExpress has said it disagrees with the decision.
• US, 2022: the U.S. Trade Representative's 2021 Review of Notorious Markets named AliExpress for the first time as a market reported to facilitate counterfeiting.

Read those findings carefully. Neither says AliExpress steals money or fails to deliver. Both are about what third-party sellers are allowed to list. That matches what most shoppers experience: payment and refunds work; the risk is in what you're buying and from whom.

How AliExpress Buyer Protection actually works

Buyer Protection is the main reason AliExpress is safe to use. According to AliExpress's own Buyer Protection page, you're covered in two situations:

• Your order doesn't match the description or photos, or arrives damaged or short, and you raise it within 15 days of receiving it.
• Your item didn't arrive, or was lost in transit, within the guaranteed delivery window shown on your order detail page.

The process is simple: message the seller, open a return or refund request from the order page, and AliExpress decides if you can't agree. Refunds go back to your original payment method or your AliExpress balance.

Where people get caught is the fine print, not the policy:

• The clock runs from delivery. If you open a parcel three weeks after it arrived, you've likely missed the 15-day window.
• Evidence decides the case. A photo of the item next to the listing photo, or a short unboxing video, wins most "not as described" disputes. A written complaint alone often gets a partial refund offer.
• Returns aren't always free. Some listings carry a free-return badge; on others, sending the item back may cost you, which is why many buyers accept a partial refund and keep cheap items.
• Nothing outside checkout is covered. A deal arranged in chat and paid by bank transfer is a private transaction.

Is it safe to put your card on AliExpress?

Paying on AliExpress itself is as safe as paying at other large marketplaces. Sellers see your name and shipping address so they can ship; they don't see your card number. Three habits make it safer still:

1. Pay with a credit card or PayPal where available, not a debit card linked to your main account. If something goes very wrong, a credit card gives you a chargeback route as a second line of defence.
2. Only type card details inside the app or on aliexpress.com after typing the address yourself. The real card risk comes from fake AliExpress emails and texts that lead to copycat payment pages, not from the real checkout.
3. Turn on transaction alerts with your bank. If a card is ever copied, an instant alert for a charge you don't recognise lets you freeze it the same day instead of finding out at the end of the month.

Why AliExpress is so cheap, and what it costs in 2026

Low prices on AliExpress aren't proof of a scam. Many stores are factories or the first wholesaler after the factory, so there's no distributor or retail markup. Sellers ship small parcels in huge volumes, and competition between thousands of stores selling near-identical products keeps margins thin.

What's changed is the cost on top of the sticker price, because two big customs rules ended the era of duty-free small parcels:

• United States: duty-free "de minimis" treatment for parcels under $800 was suspended for all countries from 29 August 2025, as summarised in KPMG's note on the CBP implementation. Low-value imports now carry duties, which usually show up as higher prices or fees at checkout.
• European Union: from 1 July 2026 the EU applies a temporary €3 customs duty on low-value parcels worth up to €150. It's charged per type of item in the parcel, so the Commission's own example of three T-shirts and a watch comes to €6.

A quick worked example for an EU shopper: you buy a €9 phone case and a €6 cable in one order. Two types of item means €6 in customs duty, on top of import VAT. Your €15 order now costs about €21 before VAT, a 40% jump. Buy just the case and the duty is €3 on a €9 item, a third of the price. Small single items are where the change hurts most. How AliExpress compares with Amazon and eBay on buyer safety

All three are marketplaces full of third-party sellers, so the useful comparison is what happens when an order goes wrong. Policies change, so check each site's current terms before relying on a deadline.

The practical difference is time. On Amazon or eBay you can be a little relaxed about opening a parcel; on AliExpress you can't. Open and check everything the week it arrives. The second difference is distance: when an AliExpress return is approved, you may be shipping the item back to another continent, so a partial refund is often the sensible outcome on cheap goods.

What doesn't differ much is the core risk. Counterfeits and misleading listings turn up on every open marketplace, which is why the seller check below matters more than which site you use.

How to check if an AliExpress seller is legit

Because the platform doesn't vet every store, this five-minute check does most of the work. Run it on any order you care about:

1. Open the store page as well as the product. Look at how long the store has been open and its positive feedback rate. A store under a year old with a feedback rate below the mid-90s needs a good reason to win your order.
2. Read photo reviews first. Real buyer photos tell you more than a 4.9 rating. Make sure they show the same product, colour and size as the listing.
3. Read the one to three star reviews. One complaint about slow shipping is normal. Repeated complaints about the same defect, wrong size or missing parts are a pattern.
4. Compare at least three listings. If one store is far cheaper than everyone else for an identical product, ask why before you buy.
5. Check the variant and cart. Confirm the item name in your cart matches what you meant to buy, not a cheaper accessory variant.
6. Message the seller with one specific question on anything expensive. A clear answer within a day is a good sign; silence is information too.

If you're buying a branded product, the rule is simpler: only from that brand's official store on AliExpress. Everything else carries a high counterfeit risk.

Is AliExpress legit for dropshipping?

Yes, AliExpress is a legitimate product source, and plenty of stores start there because there's no minimum order and the catalogue is enormous. Before you list any AliExpress product, run it through a short test:

1. Order it to your own address using the same shipping method your customers will get, and note the real delivery time from payment to doorstep.
2. Compare the item with the listing photos under normal light. Check stitching, plastic thickness, plug type and the label on the box, since those are what customers photograph when they complain.
3. Use it for a week. Charge it, wash it, wear it. Faults in cheap products tend to show up after a few days, not on unboxing day.
4. Add every cost to your price sheet: product, shipping, any duty or fee in your customers' country, payment processing and a few percent for refunds. If the margin only works without duties, it doesn't work.

None of these rule AliExpress out. They mean you should test-order every product, re-check best sellers every few months, price in duties, and keep a backup supplier for anything that sells well.
